Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Metrosideros tomentosa Pōhutukawa
Few trees command a coastal landscape like the Pōhutukawa. With its explosive crimson summer flowering, broad spreading canopy, and tolerance of salt, wind, and exposed conditions, this is a specimen that earns its place on prestige coastal properties for generations. Metrosideros tomentosa is a synonym of Metrosideros excelsa, the New Zealand Christmas tree, still used in the nursery trade; the name refers to the pale felt beneath each leaf.
Why Pōhutukawa
Crimson summer flowering: Dense, vivid red blooms delivered reliably each summer, creating a dramatic seasonal display at scale.
Year-round evergreen structure: Grey-green foliage maintains canopy presence and visual weight across all seasons.
Built for the open coast: Handles salt spray, strong winds and sandy soils on fully exposed sites.
Broad canopy and shade: A mature specimen delivers significant spread, deep shade, and architectural gravitas.
Summer bird activity: While it flowers, nectar-feeding birds work the crimson brushes right across the canopy.
Ideal Applications
Coastal feature specimen: On an exposed seaside block it grows into the one large tree that weathers salt wind year after year.
Large-scale shade planting: Suited to open lawns and large residential grounds that call for substantial canopy coverage.
Shelter for a coastal garden: Planted on the windward side, its broad crown takes the brunt of onshore wind so softer plants can grow in its lee.
Acreage frontages: Gives scale and summer colour along a long road frontage on a rural-residential property, well back from services and paving.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Spring is safest; autumn suits frost-free sites near the coast
Soil & Drainage: Beach sand, loam or heavier soils that do not stay waterlogged; moderately drought tolerant once its roots have spread
Establishment Care: Give the root zone a deep weekly soaking for the first two years, more often in dry spells, under a mulch ring kept clear of the trunk. Its vigorous roots run close to the surface, so it belongs well away from foundations, pipes, pools and paving; it has also been recorded naturalising on the south-east coast, including cliffs around Sydney, so keep it off boundaries that adjoin dunes, cliffs or coastal bushland. Pohutukawa is a known host of myrtle rust, so inspect each flush of new leaves for yellow powdery spots and treat promptly.
