Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Golden Champaca - Michelia champaca
Golden Champaca is planted for scent before anything else. Michelia champaca produces creamy orange flowers from late spring into autumn whose perfume carries right across a courtyard on a warm evening, and it does it on a dense, upright evergreen frame that doubles as a screen. In subtropical and warm temperate Australia it settles at a manageable garden size, well short of the forest tree it becomes in the monsoon forests of its native range.
Why Golden Champaca
Perfume: The flowers are among the most powerfully scented of any tree grown in Australia, strongest at dusk.
Long Season: Flowering runs in waves from late spring through to autumn rather than in a single short burst.
Dense Canopy: Large glossy leaves are held thickly enough to block a neighbour's upper window.
Narrow Habit: Naturally upright growth means it screens height without demanding a deep garden bed.
Part Shade Capable: It flowers best in sun but keeps good form and foliage in half a day of light.
Ideal Applications
Fragrance Planting: Sited beside a deck, bedroom window or outdoor dining area it perfumes the whole space.
Boundary Screening: A row gives evergreen privacy at first floor height in warm climate gardens.
Subtropical Feature: Handsome enough as a single lawn specimen where its shape can be read from all sides.
Sheltered Terrace Pots: Tolerates a large container for years if fed and watered consistently.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn in frost free zones, spring only where light frost occurs
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, moisture retentive but free draining soil with generous organic matter. It resents dry compacted clay and salt-laden wind.
Establishment Care: Two deep waterings a week through the first two summers, backed by a thick organic mulch to hold the root zone cool and damp. Protect young plants from frost with a cover or a sheltered aspect for the first two winters, as cold damage sets them back badly.
