Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pongamia - Millettia pinnata
Better known to many Australians as the tree lining Brisbane's older streets, Millettia pinnata builds a broad, dense, dome-shaped canopy of glossy pinnate leaves and briefly drops them in late winter before flushing bronze-copper new growth. It is planted for shade above all else: the canopy is wide relative to its height, the leaves are clean and glossy, and the tree tolerates coastal salt, compacted soil and long dry spells.
Why Pongamia
Canopy spread: The crown is often as wide as the tree is tall, which delivers a genuinely useful shade footprint.
New growth flush: After a brief leafless period the tree refoliates in coppery bronze, one of the better spring displays among shade trees.
Salt and coastal tolerance: It grows naturally on coastal foreshores and handles salt-laden wind without burning.
Nitrogen fixation: As a legume it improves the soil it grows in and performs on low-fertility ground.
Pea flowers: Sprays of pale lilac to pink-white flowers appear in spring and early summer and are lightly fragrant.
Ideal Applications
Street and verge shade: A proven performer in subtropical Australian street planting where hard surfaces radiate heat.
Car park and hardstand shading: Copes with compacted soil and restricted root volume better than most shade trees.
Coastal property shade: Suited to beachfront and estuarine sites where salt exposure is constant.
Large garden canopy: A single specimen in a big lawn creates a shaded outdoor room beneath it.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 6m centres for a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, avoiding cold soil and any risk of frost on young trees
Soil & Drainage: Tolerates sand, clay and compacted urban fill, and copes with brief waterlogging. Good drainage still produces the best growth, and it is frost tender when young.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week for the first three months, then weekly through the first two summers while the canopy builds. Mulch generously, stake against wind on exposed sites, and be aware that pods and seed drop in quantity and are toxic if eaten, so avoid siting directly over pool coping, driveways or areas used by pets.
