Variegated Spanish Cherry - Mimusops elengi ‘Variegata’
The Spanish cherry is grown across tropical Asia for its small star shaped flowers, which are startlingly fragrant for their size and scent a whole courtyard on a warm evening. This variegated form of Mimusops elengi adds cream to yellow leaf margins to the species' thick, glossy, wavy edged foliage, and it grows more slowly and stays smaller as a result. The plant is naturally dense and takes clipping readily, which is why it is used in the tropics as a formal hedge and topiary subject as much as a tree.
Why Variegated Spanish Cherry
Cream margined leaves: Variegation runs around the leaf edge, giving a bright but not garish pale outline to the canopy.
Powerful fragrance: Small cream flowers are modest to look at and remarkably strong in scent, especially at night.
Naturally dense: Branching is tight and layered, so the plant screens well without heavy pruning.
Slow and controllable: The variegated form grows at a measured pace, keeping it in scale in courtyards and pots.
Salt and wind tolerance: It handles coastal tropical conditions and periods of dry heat once established.
Ideal Applications
Formal clipped hedge: The dense small leaves take shearing cleanly for a tight tropical hedge.
Fragrant courtyard tree: Sited near an outdoor seating area the evening scent is the main reason to grow it.
Topiary and shaped forms: Slow growth and dense branching suit balls, cones and standards.
Bright accent planting: The variegation stands out against plain green tropical foliage such as palms and gingers.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early wet season in warm frost free districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam or sandy soil enriched with organic matter. It tolerates poorer ground once established but not persistently wet soil.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first two summers so the slow root system can catch up with the top growth. Mulch to hold moisture and suppress grass, feed in spring and midsummer to keep the variegation bright, and remove any all green reverted shoots promptly since they grow faster and will dominate.
