Chaparral Weeping Mulberry (Standard) - Morus alba ‘Chaparral’
‘Chaparral’ is the fruitless weeping mulberry, a male selection of Morus alba budded onto a straight standard stem so every branch arches over and cascades to the ground in a dense green dome. Because it sets no fruit, it delivers the umbrella habit and big soft heart shaped leaves without the purple staining that rules ordinary mulberries out near paving and pool surrounds. Designers reach for it when a small garden needs one strong sculptural object that reads as a leafy parasol in summer and a bare cage of curling branches in winter.
Why Chaparral Weeping Mulberry
Fruitless clone: This is a male form, so there is no fruit drop, no staining and no fruit fly interest under the canopy.
Umbrella canopy: The head is grafted at the top of a clear stem and weeps almost vertically, giving usable shade over a bench or table within a very small footprint.
Winter silhouette: Once the leaves drop the twisting pendulous framework becomes the feature, and it lets winter sun back into the space beneath.
Heat and dry tolerance: White mulberry copes with hot inland summers and reflected heat off masonry better than most small deciduous feature trees.
Contained root system: Roots are far less invasive than fruiting mulberries of the same size, which makes it workable in courtyards and raised beds.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard shade tree: A single specimen over a seating area gives dappled summer cover then opens up completely for winter warmth.
Formal entry pairs: Matched standards either side of a door or gate hold a symmetrical, clipped look with very little work.
Poolside planting: The clean, fruitless canopy suits paved pool surrounds where staining and litter matter.
Large containers: The restrained root system takes well to big planters on rooftops and terraces, provided watering is reliable.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m apart for a repeated row of touching domes
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m apart, or single as a standalone feature
Best Planting Season: Autumn through winter while dormant is ideal, early spring is acceptable
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam preferred, tolerates clay and mildly alkaline soils provided water does not sit around the root ball
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers rather than little and often, so roots chase moisture downwards. Mulch to the outer edge of the canopy at 75mm depth, keeping the mulch well clear of the trunk and the graft union.
