Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Orange Jessamine (Standard) - Murraya paniculata
Trained as a standard, Murraya paniculata gives you a clean straight stem topped with a tight ball of glossy pinnate foliage, which is a very different plant from the shaggy hedge version most people know. The head clips readily and holds a sphere with two or three cuts a year. It flowers in sudden white flushes after warm rain, and the scent carries well beyond the plant, which is why standards get placed at entries and beside outdoor seating rather than at the back of a bed.
Why Orange Jessamine Standards
Trained Ball Head: The crown is already formed and shaped, so the plant reads as finished garden architecture from day one.
Fragrant Flushes: Waves of small white flowers follow warm humid weather, repeating several times between spring and autumn.
Small Glossy Leaf: Fine pinnate foliage takes a crisp clipped edge that larger leaved shrubs cannot hold.
Warm Climate Toughness: Once established it handles heat, humidity and coastal conditions along the eastern seaboard with little attention.
Clear Trunk: The bare stem lets you underplant right up to the base with groundcover, agapanthus or clipped box.
Ideal Applications
Matched entry pairs: Two standards flanking a front door or gate is the most common and most effective use.
Driveway avenue: Repeated at even spacing they create rhythm along a drive without blocking sightlines at car height.
Raised screen above a fence: The heads sit above fence height, screening a neighbouring window while the garden bed below stays open.
Large containers: They hold form well in generous pots on a terrace, provided the pot is not allowed to dry out completely.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2m centres so the heads knit into a raised hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5m to 3m centres to keep each head distinct
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn while the soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, mildly acidic to neutral, with steady moisture. It will yellow in cold wet soil and sulk in heavy clay that stays saturated.
Establishment Care: Keep the rootball evenly moist for the first two summers and feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and again in mid summer to drive flowering flushes. Mulch to 75mm, held clear of the trunk, and stake until the stem holds the weight of the head in wind.
