Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sacred Bamboo - Nandina domestica
Despite the name, sacred bamboo is no relation to bamboo at all: it is an upright cane forming shrub with layered, ferny compound foliage that turns through orange, bronze and deep red as the weather cools. Nandina domestica earns its place by being almost indestructible, holding form in sun or shade, in heat, cold, drought and neglect, while still reading as a refined plant. Sprays of white flowers in late spring are followed by clusters of scarlet berries that hold on through winter.
Why Sacred Bamboo
Winter Colour Change: Foliage colours to red and bronze in cold weather, then greens again in spring.
Vertical Cane Habit: Slim upright stems suit narrow beds where a rounded shrub will not fit.
Extreme Adaptability: Tolerates full sun to deep shade, frost, drought, poor soil and root competition.
Berry Display: Scarlet berry clusters extend interest through the coldest months.
Minimal Maintenance: Renewed by cutting the oldest canes to ground level every few years rather than shearing.
Ideal Applications
Narrow Side Beds: The upright habit fits tight spaces between a path and a wall.
Mass Planting Under Trees: Handles dry shade and root competition beneath established canopy.
Japanese and Courtyard Gardens: A traditional companion to gravel, stone and clipped forms.
Soft Informal Screen: Repeated along a fence line it filters a view without the bulk of a hedge.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m for a continuous soft screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m as separated clumps
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, though it establishes readily at almost any time
Soil & Drainage: Very tolerant, from sandy to clay soils, provided drainage is reasonable. Better colour and denser growth come from moist, well drained ground.
Establishment Care: Water through the first summer to settle it in, after which it is genuinely drought tolerant in most temperate districts. Mulch lightly, thin out the oldest canes at ground level each year or two to keep the clump furnished low down, and remove spent berry clusters in mild districts, since seedlings can appear in nearby bushland.
