Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Leichhardt Tree - Nauclea orientalis
Nauclea orientalis is a northern Australian riverbank tree with large, broad, glossy leaves and deeply corky bark, named for the explorer who recorded it along the tropical rivers where it grows. In summer it produces fragrant golden orange flower balls, followed by round fruit, and the whole tree has a bold, coarse texture that reads as unmistakably tropical. It is one of the few large natives that tolerates seasonally flooded ground, which makes it a genuine option for creek lines, dam edges and low lying corners.
Why Leichhardt Tree
Bold foliage: Large paired glossy leaves give a coarse tropical texture unlike the fine leaved eucalypts and melaleucas.
Fragrant flower balls: Dense spherical heads of golden orange flowers open in the warmer months and are strongly scented.
Corky bark: Thick fissured bark develops early and gives the trunk real character on a young tree.
Flood tolerance: It grows naturally along rivers and billabongs and copes with seasonal inundation.
Rapid canopy: Fast early growth delivers usable shade on a bare tropical block within a few seasons.
Ideal Applications
Creek and dam plantings: It stabilises banks in the wet tropics and handles the water levels that kill other trees.
Large shade tree: On acreage or in parkland it provides deep, broad shade with a bold visual presence.
Native revegetation: It is a natural component of riparian restoration across northern Australia.
Tropical parkland feature: Its scale, bark and flowering suit civic and open space planting in the far north.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Early wet season, or spring in frost free subtropical gardens
Soil & Drainage: Prefers deep, moisture retentive alluvial soils and tolerates heavy clay and periodic flooding. It grows far more slowly on dry, shallow or sandy ground.
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first dry season, as young trees are far less drought tolerant than mature ones. Mulch out to the canopy edge, keep grass and weeds off the root zone for the first three years, and allow generous clearance from buildings and services because this becomes a large, broad crowned tree.
