Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Tree Everlasting - Ozothamnus ferrugineus
Tree Everlasting is one of the fast, forgiving pioneer shrubs of south eastern Australia, Ozothamnus ferrugineus colonising creek flats and disturbed bush from the Victorian ranges through to Tasmania. It carries narrow dark green leaves with a rusty woolly underside, then smothers itself in flat heads of tiny cream white flowers through summer. It is chosen where a garden needs bulk and habitat value quickly, particularly on the damper ground where drier natives sulk.
Why Tree Everlasting
Speed to volume: It fills a gap in two or three seasons, which makes it useful as a nurse plant while slower framework species catch up.
Damp ground tolerance: Unlike most silver leaved natives it accepts seasonally wet soil, creek margins and swale edges.
Summer flowering: The dense cream flower heads arrive from roughly December to February, when many native gardens have gone quiet.
Insect habitat: The flat flower heads draw large numbers of native bees, hoverflies and beetles.
Rust coloured reverse: Wind lifts the leaves to show the tawny felted undersides, giving the shrub a two tone texture at distance.
Ideal Applications
Revegetation and screening: Planted in a drift it forms a soft informal screen on rural boundaries within a few years.
Creek and swale planting: Suits the transition band between permanently wet ground and dry slope.
Native mixed border: Works as the tall grey green backdrop behind correas, westringias and native grasses.
Habitat plantings: Used in bird and pollinator gardens where dense twiggy cover is wanted at head height.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3.5m apart
Best Planting Season: Autumn in warm districts, early spring in cold frosty ones
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across loam, clay loam and sand, and unusually tolerant of soils that stay damp in winter
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer, then only through extended dry spells, as established plants are largely self sufficient. Tip prune after flowering from year one to keep the base clothed, because plants left unpruned open up and become leggy.
