Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mornington Peninsula Coast Everlasting - Ozothamnus turbinatus
This is the dune shrub of the southern Victorian and South Australian coast, a compact grey green mound that grows where salt spray and sand blast would kill almost anything ornamental. Ozothamnus turbinatus has small crowded leaves with rolled margins and white felted undersides, an adaptation to wind and salt that also gives it a lovely soft silver cast in the garden. Coastal landscapers use it as the reliable low to mid layer in exposed front line positions where westringia alone starts to look monotonous.
Why Coast Everlasting
Salt and wind hardiness: It grows naturally on primary dunes, so it handles direct onshore wind and salt laden air without leaf burn.
Silver texture: The woolly leaf reverse and pale stems read as soft grey from a distance and pair well with coastal grasses.
Dense low habit: It naturally holds a rounded, closely branched form rather than opening out at the base.
Sand tolerance: Thrives in almost pure sand with very low fertility, where richer soils actually shorten its life.
Flowering display: Clusters of small cream to pale yellow flower heads cover the shrub through spring and into summer.
Ideal Applications
Coastal front gardens: A dependable structural shrub for beach houses on the Mornington Peninsula, Bellarine, Fleurieu and comparable coasts.
Dune stabilisation: Planted in groups it binds loose sand and shelters smaller ground layer species.
Low informal hedge: Repeated at close spacing it forms a soft clipped edge to paths and driveways.
Indigenous plantings: A correct local species choice for revegetation projects along the southern coastline.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m apart
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early winter so roots establish on natural rainfall
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential, sand and sandy loam preferred, and no added fertiliser or rich compost
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly for the first six months only, then leave it alone, since overwatering is the most common cause of failure. A thin gravel or coarse sand mulch suits it better than heavy organic mulch against the stem.
