Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Screw Pine - Pandanus
Pandanus is one of the few large feature plants that will stand in front-line coastal exposure and keep looking deliberate rather than battered. The spiralling rosettes of long strap leaves give the genus its common name, and mature plants throw down thick prop roots that hold the trunk clear of the ground in a way no other landscape plant replicates. It is specified for beachfront and resort work where salt wind, sand and glare rule out almost everything else.
Why Screw Pine
Salt and Wind Tolerance: Handles direct coastal exposure including salt spray and sand blast.
Prop Roots: Aerial roots form a sculptural buttress that becomes the plant's defining feature.
Spiral Leaf Rosettes: Long strap leaves arranged in a spiral give strong graphic form.
Sandy Soil Performance: Grows well in poor, free-draining coastal sand where richer soils are unavailable.
Low Water Demand: Once anchored, it survives on rainfall in coastal and subtropical districts.
Ideal Applications
Beachfront Garden: Front-line planting on exposed coastal properties and foredunes.
Resort and Poolside: Delivers an immediate tropical resort character around pools and cabanas.
Coastal Streetscape: Tough enough for exposed civic and foreshore planting.
Architectural Feature: Single specimen used as sculpture against render, timber or stone.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m to 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Sandy, free-draining soil preferred; avoid heavy clay and any site that holds water
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer to get the root system anchored, then reduce to occasional deep soakings. Mulch lightly, keep the prop roots undisturbed once they reach the ground, and site the plant away from paths since the leaf margins are sharply toothed.
