Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coastal Screw Pine - Pandanus tectorius
Nothing else delivers the same coastal silhouette: a branching trunk propped on a cage of aerial roots, topped with spiralling rosettes of long strappy leaves. Pandanus tectorius grows naturally on the dunes and headlands of northern Australia, which means salt spray, sand and wind are its normal conditions rather than stresses it merely tolerates. Female plants carry large segmented fruit heads that ripen orange and red, adding to a plant that is already pure sculpture.
Why Coastal Screw Pine
Prop Roots: Stilt like aerial roots lift the trunk and give the plant its unmistakable architecture.
Salt Immunity: It thrives in direct salt spray on front line coastal sites where almost nothing else survives.
Spiral Foliage: Leaves emerge in a tight spiral, creating a geometric crown that reads strongly against sky or water.
Sand Tolerance: Pure sand with almost no organic matter is its natural growing medium.
Fruit Display: Female plants produce large segmented heads that ripen through orange to red.
Ideal Applications
Beachfront Gardens: The first choice for exposed coastal frontages in the tropics and subtropics.
Resort and Pool Landscapes: Its form carries a poolside area with a single plant rather than a group.
Sculptural Focal Point: Uplit at night the prop roots and spiral crown throw dramatic shadow.
Dune Stabilisation: Planted in groups on sandy slopes it binds loose sand while establishing.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m for a grove effect
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer in warm frost free districts
Soil & Drainage: Sandy, sharply draining soil; it will rot in heavy clay or ground that stays wet
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first warm season while the prop roots take hold, then reduce to occasional deep watering. Mulch lightly, keep the crown clear of built up debris, and note that the leaf margins carry sharp spines, so site it away from paths and play areas.
