Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dwarf Spineless Screw Pine - Pandanus tectorius
The dwarf spineless selection of Pandanus tectorius keeps the spiralling leaf rosettes and propping stilt roots of the coastal screw pine, but without the saw-toothed leaf margins of the wild form that make it a poor choice beside a path or pool coping. It is one of very few genuinely architectural plants that will sit in direct salt spray on an exposed foreshore block and hold its shape year after year. Where a cordyline or strelitzia scorches and tatters, this simply keeps growing.
Why Dwarf Spineless Screw Pine
Smooth Leaf Margins: The spineless form can be planted within arm's reach of paths, pool surrounds and seating without the hazard of the toothed wild type.
Salt Immunity: Handles direct coastal exposure and salt-laden wind on beachfront sites from Coffs Harbour north to Darwin.
Aerial Prop Roots: Thick buttressing roots develop from the lower trunk over time and become the main sculptural feature at eye level.
Contained Scale: Reaches a fraction of the height of the wild coastal species, so it suits courtyards where the full-size screw pine would overwhelm.
Very Low Input: Needs no pruning beyond removing spent lower leaves, and copes with infertile sand once roots are down.
Ideal Applications
Poolside Feature: The smooth foliage and non-invasive root plate make it one of the safer sculptural choices immediately beside paving.
Beachfront Courtyards: Planted in odd-numbered groups it delivers an island resort character on sites too windy for palms.
Entry Statement: A single specimen in a raised bed or large trough reads as living sculpture against rendered walls.
Coastal Dune Planting: Suits stabilised sand behind the primary dune where salt, glare and drainage defeat most ornamentals.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, once soil temperatures are consistently warm
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining sand or sandy loam; tolerates poor infertile coastal sand but will rot in heavy waterlogged clay
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first warm season, tapering off once new leaf spears appear from the crown. Mulch with coarse bark or pebble to 75mm, keeping it clear of the trunk base so the developing prop roots stay dry and visible.
