Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Snow Wood - Pararchidendron pruinosum
Snow Wood is one of the better behaved rainforest trees for a suburban block. Pararchidendron pruinosum carries soft, ferny, bipinnate foliage on an open layered frame, produces cream powderpuff flowers that age to gold and carry a strong perfume, then follows them with curled orange pods that split to reveal glossy black seeds. It is also a host plant for several native butterflies, so it does habitat work as well as ornamental work.
Why Snow Wood
Perfumed Powderpuffs: Fragrant cream flower balls appear in spring and early summer and turn deep gold as they age.
Ferny Canopy: The finely divided bipinnate leaves cast dappled rather than dense shade, so planting can continue underneath.
Twisted Orange Pods: Curled seed pods open to show black seeds and stay on the tree as a second display through autumn.
Butterfly Host: Larvae of several Australian butterflies feed on the foliage, which makes it a genuine habitat inclusion.
Sensible Scale: Unlike most rainforest species it settles at a size a normal backyard can carry.
Ideal Applications
Small Rainforest Garden: Provides upper canopy structure without swamping a courtyard-sized space.
Habitat Planting: Combines nectar, larval food and seed in one tree for butterfly and bird gardens.
Rainforest Edge and Understorey: Grows happily in dappled light beneath taller established canopy.
Shade Near Entertaining Areas: The flower perfume carries, so it is worth placing within reach of a deck or courtyard.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer in temperate zones, autumn or the start of the wet in the subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, humus-rich soil with free drainage. It dislikes prolonged waterlogging and struggles on thin dry sand without added organic matter
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two summers, watering deeply twice a week in hot weather rather than lightly every day. Mulch heavily with leaf litter or composted bark and shelter young plants from strong drying wind and heavy frost.
