Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Nijisseiki Nashi Pear - Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Nijisseiki’
Sold in Australia as Twentieth Century, ‘Nijisseiki’ set the standard for the nashi type: round, pale yellow green fruit that eats crisp and dripping with juice straight off the tree, closer to an apple in texture than to a European pear. Pyrus pyrifolia makes a neat, upright, well branched tree that is easier to hold in bounds than most pears. Spring blossom is heavy and white, and autumn foliage colours before it falls.
Why Nijisseiki Nashi
Fruit Quality: Thin skinned, high sugar and extremely juicy, best eaten fresh and chilled.
Tree Ripening: Unlike European pears, nashi are picked ripe and need no conditioning indoors.
Cropping: Partially self fertile, but crops far more heavily with a second nashi or an overlapping European pear nearby.
Size Control: Naturally moderate growth that holds at 3 to 4m with routine winter pruning.
Ornamental Value: Dense white blossom in early spring and orange red autumn leaves earn it a place in a front garden.
Ideal Applications
Home orchard: Fits a mixed fruit planting and extends the harvest into late summer.
Small garden tree: Compact enough to serve as the single fruit tree on a suburban block.
Espalier or fan: Spur bearing habit trains readily onto wires along a warm fence.
Edible screen: Planted in a row it gives a productive summer screen along a boundary.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3-4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4-5m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or autumn to early spring from a container
Soil & Drainage: Deep, well drained loam holding steady moisture, avoiding waterlogged or shallow ground
Establishment Care: Keep water up through late spring and summer while fruit is sizing, as moisture stress causes fruit drop. Mulch to the drip line and thin heavy crops so the limbs are not overloaded.
