Packham’s Triumph Pear (Espalier) - Pyrus communis ‘Packham’s Triumph’
Australia's best known pear, raised at Molong in central New South Wales in the 1890s, presented here as a trained espalier on a flat framework. Pyrus communis ‘Packham’s Triumph’ takes to espalier well because its spurs are long lived and it fruits on the same short wood year after year, so a horizontal arm keeps producing rather than needing constant renewal. The result is a productive tree occupying about 400mm of depth against a wall or fence.
Why Packham’s Triumph
Fruit: Pale green skin turning butter yellow, with fine white flesh that ripens off the tree after picking in autumn.
Australian Origin: Bred in New South Wales and grown here for well over a century, so its behaviour in local conditions is thoroughly understood.
Spur Bearing: Fruit forms on short permanent spurs along the trained arms, which is what makes the flat form work.
Spring Blossom: Clean white flowers cover the framework before the leaves harden, giving an ornamental season as well as a crop.
Pollination: It sets some fruit alone but crops far more heavily with another European pear such as Williams' Bon Chretien or Beurre Bosc flowering nearby.
Ideal Applications
Wall Trained Productive Screen: Covers a blank brick or rendered wall with a living, cropping panel.
Fence Line Edible Garden: Runs along a boundary wire on a narrow strip that could not hold a full tree.
Courtyard Kitchen Garden: Delivers real fruit yield from a footprint of well under a square metre of bed.
Garden Division: Two or three plants on a freestanding wire frame make a permeable, seasonal internal screen.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5-3.5m between plants along a wire run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3-4m
Best Planting Season: Winter into early spring while the tree is dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile loam with good drainage and a pH near neutral. Pears will not tolerate a permanently wet root zone, and they need genuine winter chill, roughly 600 to 800 hours below 7C, so cool districts and tablelands suit them best.
Establishment Care: Fix the framework before planting and tie the existing arms to horizontal wires set 400mm apart, keeping ties loose enough to allow the wood to thicken. Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, and shorten new laterals to three or four leaves in mid summer to build fruiting spurs rather than leafy growth.
Plant Details
