Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Black Bamboo - Phyllostachys nigra
Culms of Phyllostachys nigra emerge green and darken through their second year to a polished jet black, carrying fine green foliage above. It is the most sought-after bamboo in temperate Australian gardens and also the one that most needs to be understood before planting: this is a running bamboo, spreading by underground rhizomes, and it must be installed with a proper root barrier or in a contained bed.
Why Black Bamboo
Black culms: Mature canes turn glossy black, a colour no other hardy screening plant offers.
Fine foliage: Small delicate leaves rustle in the slightest breeze and cast a light dappled shade rather than a heavy one.
Cold hardiness: Unlike tropical clumpers it thrives through cold winters and frost across southern Australia.
Vertical line: Straight, evenly spaced canes give a strong architectural rhythm in courtyards and along walls.
Fast screen: Once running it produces new canes each spring at close to full height in a single season.
Ideal Applications
Contained courtyard grove: Grown in a fully enclosed raised bed or large trough, which is the safest way to use it.
Barriered screen line: Planted along a boundary behind a rigid root barrier taken to at least 600mm depth.
Japanese-style gardens: The classic bamboo of the tradition, used with gravel, stone and clipped evergreens.
Large containers: A practical way to enjoy it in small gardens where in-ground planting is unwise.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres, always within a barrier
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in temperate districts
Soil & Drainage: Fertile, moist, free-draining soil rich in organic matter. It runs hardest in loose, well-watered ground, which is the very reason containment matters.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers and keep the soil consistently moist, as drought stress causes leaf curl and stunted canes. Install a rigid rhizome barrier or grow it in a sealed planter, inspect the perimeter each spring and sever any escaping rhizomes, and thin old canes at ground level annually to show off the black culms.
