Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Norway Spruce - Picea abies
This is the classic dark green conifer of northern European forests, and in Australia it belongs firmly in cool country. Picea abies builds a strong pyramidal frame with tiered branches whose secondary branchlets hang in curtains as the tree matures, and it carries the longest cones of any spruce. Given cold winters, reliable moisture and deep soil it grows quickly for a conifer; on hot dry or humid subtropical sites it will not thrive, so honest site selection matters more than anything else with this species.
Why Norway Spruce
Strong Pyramidal Form: A single dominant leader and even tiered branching give a formal silhouette without any training.
Weeping Detail: Mature trees develop drooping branchlets that soften the outline and catch light and snow.
Dense Shelter: Foliage holds low and thick, which makes rows genuinely effective as windbreak and shelter planting.
Large Ornamental Cones: Pendulous cones of 10cm to 16cm are the largest of the spruces and hang through the cooler months.
Cold Country Performance: Frost, snow and hard winters are its natural conditions rather than a stress.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Feature Tree: A single specimen in open ground on a highland or tableland property.
Shelterbelt and Windbreak: Rows on rural blocks in cold districts, alone or mixed with other conifers.
Living Christmas Tree: The traditional species for the purpose, grown in ground or in a large container.
Evergreen Backdrop: Dark foliage behind deciduous or flowering planting makes autumn and spring colour read more strongly.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3m to 4m for a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6m to 8m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in cool districts
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive but free draining soil, slightly acidic to neutral; it will not tolerate hot dry shallow ground
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist through the first three summers, as spruces are shallow rooted and suffer quickly in drought. Mulch heavily to hold soil moisture and temperature steady, and avoid cultivating or compacting the surface roots.
