Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Serbian Spruce - Picea omorika
The Serbian spruce is the narrowest of the commonly grown spruces, forming a slim spire with short branches that sweep down and then turn up at the tips, showing the silver-banded undersides of the needles. Picea omorika survives in the wild on limestone gorges in the Balkans, which has made it unusually adaptable to varied soils and urban conditions compared with other spruces. In Australia it is a cool climate plant only, at home in Tasmania, the Victorian ranges, the Adelaide Hills and the tablelands.
Why the Serbian Spruce
Slender Spire: Extremely narrow for its height, so it gives vertical scale in a tight footprint.
Two Tone Needles: Dark green above and silver-blue beneath, giving the canopy a shimmering quality.
Soil Adaptability: More tolerant of alkaline and clay soils than most spruces.
Cold Hardiness: Handles hard frost and snow load without damage.
Formal Symmetry: Grows to a naturally even cone without pruning or training.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Feature Tree: The vertical exclamation point in a highland or tableland garden.
Narrow Screen Line: Planted in a row to screen a boundary where width is restricted.
Formal Entry Pair: Matched specimens flanking a gate on a rural or hill-country property.
Living Christmas Tree: Its natural symmetry and needle retention suit that traditional use.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring, avoiding frozen or waterlogged soil
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil; tolerates a wider pH range than other spruces
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, as spruces are intolerant of prolonged heat and drought. Mulch to 75mm over the root zone clear of the trunk, and site out of hot, dry inland wind which scorches the foliage.
