Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
The Blues Blue Spruce - Picea pungens ‘The Blues’
Take the bluest needles in the conifer world and put them on a weeping, irregular frame, and you have a plant that behaves more like garden sculpture than a tree. Picea pungens ‘The Blues’ has no reliable leader of its own, so it is staked to a chosen height and then allowed to fall in draped, uneven curtains of powder blue. No two plants take the same shape, which is exactly why it is used as a single specimen rather than repeated in rows.
Why The Blues Spruce
Exceptional Colour: Needles are among the most intensely silver blue of any conifer and hold that colour through the year.
Weeping Habit: Branches hang from the staked point in irregular curtains rather than forming a symmetrical crown.
Individual Character: Each plant develops its own asymmetric shape, so a specimen is genuinely one of a kind.
Compact Growth: Slow extension and a narrow footprint suit courtyards and modestly sized gardens.
Cold Loving: Frost and cold winters bring out the best colour and the healthiest growth.
Ideal Applications
Standalone Sculpture: Positioned in gravel, lawn or a simple mulched bed where the silhouette can be read from all sides.
Contemporary Courtyards: The blue tone and irregular form sit well against concrete, steel and dark timber.
Above Retaining Walls: Planted high, the weeping growth cascades down the wall face.
Feature Containers: Slow growth suits a large pot in a cool climate entry or terrace position.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; allow 2m if grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m or more, giving the weeping form room to be seen
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in cool districts
Soil & Drainage: Well drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral; constant wetness will kill it
Establishment Care: Keep the stake in place while the trained trunk hardens, and check ties annually so they never bite into the bark. Water deeply during dry spells for the first three summers, mulch the root zone, and resist any urge to prune the weeping growth into symmetry.
