Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ivory Cane Palm - Pinanga coronata
Pinanga coronata is a clumping understorey palm from Indonesia, sending up multiple slender canes with a smooth pale crownshaft, which is where the common name comes from. Its best feature is the new foliage: emerging leaves are mottled bronze, pink and copper before hardening off to green, so there is nearly always some colour in the crown. It is a shade plant by nature and will scorch badly in open sun, so treat it as a filler beneath larger trees rather than a specimen for a hot courtyard.
Why Ivory Cane Palm
Clumping habit: Multiple slim canes of varying height give a layered, natural thicket rather than a single stem.
New leaf colour: Emerging fronds are mottled pink and bronze, an unusual feature among palms.
Pale crownshaft: The ivory to pale green crownshaft is a clean detail at eye level.
Deep shade tolerance: One of the better palms for genuinely dim positions under canopy.
Modest height: Stays small enough to use beneath established trees without competing with them.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest underplanting: Fills the middle layer beneath larger palms and canopy trees.
Shaded courtyards: Works in enclosed urban spaces that receive little direct sun.
Atriums and covered terraces: Tolerates the low light and shelter of internal planting areas.
Tropical screening: Planted in a row it forms a soft, informal green screen at a low height.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a continuous screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moist, humus-laden soil that still drains freely. It is frost tender and needs humidity and shelter, so it suits tropical, subtropical and warm frost-free coastal gardens only.
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first year and keep the root zone consistently damp; drying out shows immediately as leaf-tip burn. Mulch with leaf litter or composted bark, protect from wind and direct midday sun, and feed with a slow-release palm fertiliser in spring and midsummer.
