Shimidsu Sakura Flowering Cherry - Prunus serrulata ‘Shimidsu Sakura’
This is the closing act of the cherry season, flowering after the early pinks have finished. Prunus serrulata ‘Shimidsu Sakura’ opens fat pink tinged buds into heavy double white flowers that hang on long stalks beneath horizontal branches, so the display is seen from below rather than above. The habit is the reason to choose it: broad, flat topped and wider than it is tall, which makes it a natural canopy over a seating area rather than a vertical tree.
Why Shimidsu Sakura
Late Flowering: Blooms toward the end of the cherry season, extending the display by two or three weeks after the early cultivars drop.
Pendant Clusters: The long flower stalks let the double blooms dangle clear of the branch, an effect no upright cherry can copy.
Spreading Canopy: A low wide crown that throws useful summer shade at a scale suited to a suburban courtyard.
Bronze New Growth: Fresh leaves emerge coppery bronze alongside the last of the flowers, then settle to green.
Autumn Colour: Foliage turns apricot to bronze orange before falling in cool districts.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Canopy: Planted over a bench or paved terrace where the hanging flowers sit at eye level.
Lawn Specimen: A single tree in open lawn shows the flat tiered branching to best effect.
Formal Garden Rooms: The symmetrical crown suits clipped hedging and structured beds.
Cool Climate Front Gardens: Small enough for a modest block yet large enough to carry the whole spring display.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m in a row, allowing crowns to meet
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m for full crown development
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while dormant, or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, neutral to slightly acid. Cherries will not tolerate waterlogging, so mound plant in heavy clay
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers rather than little and often, and keep grass cleared back to the drip line. Mulch to 75mm with coarse organic material but hold it 100mm clear of the trunk, since collar rot is the common killer of young cherries.
