Shimidsu Sakura Flowering Cherry (Standard) - Prunus serrulata ‘Shimidsu Sakura’
‘Shimidsu Sakura’ is the flat-topped, wide-spreading Japanese cherry, grown here as a grafted standard so the canopy begins at a clear stem height and then layers outward horizontally. Its flowers are large and fully double, opening from pink buds to pure white and hanging on long stalks in clusters below the branches, which is what produces the curtain effect that makes this cultivar famous. Prunus serrulata ‘Shimidsu Sakura’ closes the year with orange to bronze autumn colour.
Why Shimidsu Sakura Flowering Cherry
Pendulous Double Flowers: Large white pompom blooms hang on long stalks beneath the branches rather than sitting on top of them.
Flat Spreading Crown: Usually wider than it is tall, with distinctly horizontal layered branching.
Clear Stem Standard: The grafted stem lifts the canopy so there is usable space and light beneath the tree.
Late Cherry Season: One of the later flowering Japanese cherries, extending the blossom display.
Autumn Colour: Foliage turns orange and bronze before falling, giving a second season of interest.
Ideal Applications
Formal Avenue or Pair: Matched standards give a uniform canopy line along a drive or path.
Lawn Feature: The clear stem and wide flat crown suit an open turf setting with room to spread.
Shade Over Entertaining Areas: The broad canopy covers a wide table or seating zone in summer.
Courtyard Canopy: Works where a spreading rather than upright shape is needed above paving.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging form, allow at least 4m between trees in a row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m, given the crown is wider than tall
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Fertile, free-draining loam, neutral to slightly acidic. It needs winter chill and will not tolerate compacted clay or ground that stays wet, which invites root rot
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and keep turf off the root zone while the canopy fills out. Mulch clear of the trunk, stake until the stem stiffens, and prune only in late summer in dry weather, since cherries are prone to canker and silver leaf when cut in wet or cold conditions.
