Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Lacebark Pine - Pinus bungeana
The bark is the whole argument for Pinus bungeana. It flakes away in irregular plates to leave a jigsaw of olive green, cream, grey and dull purple that keeps changing as the tree ages, and because the species is naturally low branching and often multi stemmed, that bark is at eye level rather than up in the canopy. Growth is slow and the habit is broad and open, with bright green needles in threes on upswept branches. It is a collector's conifer for cool and temperate districts, planted where people will pass close enough to see it properly.
Why Lacebark Pine
Bark Pattern: Exfoliating plates leave a mottled patchwork of cream, olive, grey and purple that improves every year.
Multi Stemmed Habit: Often carries several trunks from low down, which triples the amount of bark on display.
Measured Growth: Slow enough that it will not outgrow a considered position within a normal garden lifetime.
Needle Quality: Bright green needles held in threes give a lighter, more open canopy than most pines.
Cold Hardiness: Fully frost hardy and well suited to tablelands, highland and southern gardens.
Ideal Applications
Close Range Courtyard Specimen: Placed beside a path or terrace where the trunks are seen and touched.
Uplit Entry Feature: Night lighting on the trunks makes the bark pattern the strongest thing in the garden after dark.
Cool Climate Collector Garden: A key plant in a garden built around bark, form and texture rather than flowers.
Lawn Specimen: A single tree in mown grass with nothing planted beneath it, so the stems stay fully visible.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. In a small grove, 3 to 4m apart.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m.
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, from slightly acidic through to mildly alkaline. It will not accept waterlogged ground at any time of year.
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first two summers, deeply rather than often. Mulch out to the dripline, keep underplanting low so the trunks read clearly, and take care with mowers and whipper snippers because damaged bark does not recover its pattern.
