Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Aleppo Pine - Pinus halepensis
Aleppo pine is the conifer for the hardest sites in Australia: dry, hot, alkaline, salt affected and windswept ground where most trees simply give up. Pinus halepensis develops an open, irregular, wind sculpted crown of bright green paired needles above a pale trunk that darkens and fissures with age, giving it a character closer to a Mediterranean hillside than a plantation conifer. It is also the species most commonly planted as a commemorative Lone Pine in Australian memorial grounds.
Why Aleppo Pine
Drought Endurance: Survives on rainfall alone across most of southern Australia once its roots are down.
Alkaline and Poor Soil Tolerance: Grows on limestone, sand and shallow rocky ground that defeats other conifers.
Coastal Exposure: Withstands salt laden wind on foreshore and near coastal sites.
Wind Sculpted Character: The irregular open crown gains character rather than looking damaged in exposed positions.
Fast Early Growth: Establishes and gains height quickly for a pine, so shelter arrives sooner.
Ideal Applications
Rural Windbreak: Planted in rows to shelter paddocks, buildings and stock on dry properties.
Coastal Foreshore Planting: Holds ground and provides shade in sandy, salt exposed conditions.
Memorial and Commemorative Grounds: The traditional Lone Pine species for Australian remembrance plantings.
Dry Inland Shade: Provides genuine canopy shade in low rainfall districts where broadleaf trees fail.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 8m in a windbreak row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m as separated trees
Best Planting Season: Autumn through to early spring, ahead of summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy, rocky or limestone soils suit it best. It tolerates poor fertility and alkalinity but not waterlogged clay.
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers only, after which supplementary irrigation is rarely needed. Mulch to the drip line, keep grass competition away in the first years, and be aware that it seeds freely in dry districts, so monitor for self sown seedlings near bushland.
