Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pincushion Dwarf Mountain Pine - Pinus mugo ‘Pincushion’
Pinus mugo ‘Pincushion’ is a true dwarf selection of the European mountain pine, building a tight rounded bun of short dark needles that stays low without any pruning at all. It is the conifer to reach for when a rockery, gravel bed or formal courtyard needs year round green mass at knee height rather than a plant that outgrows the space in five years. Cold, wind and stony ground suit it far better than rich beds and shade.
Why Pincushion Dwarf Mountain Pine
Genuinely dwarf: Annual extension is measured in a few centimetres, so the size you plant is close to the size you keep.
Self shaping: The cushion forms naturally and needs no clipping to stay dense and even.
Winter colour: Needles hold a solid dark green through frost instead of bronzing off.
Exposure tolerance: Wind, snow and thin poor soil are its native conditions, not a compromise.
Textural weight: A dense low dome anchors loose plantings of grasses and perennials that would otherwise drift.
Ideal Applications
Rockery and scree beds: Sits among stone at the scale the setting asks for, with roots that cope with sharp gravelly mixes.
Formal courtyard punctuation: Repeated at intervals it reads as clipped green balls without any clipping.
Troughs and large pots: Slow growth means years in the same container before it needs moving on.
Low border edging: A run along a path holds structure through winter when perennials are cut back.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a continuous low band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in cool districts; avoid planting into midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Gritty free draining soil, poor is fine, alkaline is tolerated; wet winter feet are the one thing it will not accept
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer only, then taper off, as an established plant resents constant moisture. Mulch with gravel or coarse scoria rather than bark so the base of the cushion stays dry and airy.
