Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Blue Japanese White Pine - Pinus parviflora ‘Glauca’
Japanese white pine is a five needle pine, and the needles of this blue form are short, twisted and marked with white bands on the inner faces, so the whole tree carries a soft silver blue haze. Pinus parviflora ‘Glauca’ grows slowly into an irregular, tiered shape with horizontal branching that looks composed rather than symmetrical, which is exactly why it is the pine of choice for Japanese influenced gardens and for niwaki pruning. Small ornamental cones appear on quite young trees.
Why Blue Japanese White Pine
Silver Blue Needles: Short twisted needles with white inner surfaces give a colour effect no green pine can match.
Layered Branching: Growth is naturally tiered and asymmetric, producing character without any training.
Slow Growth: It stays in scale with a courtyard or feature bed for decades rather than years.
Takes Shaping: Responds well to candle pinching and cloud pruning, so the form can be directed if desired.
Cones Early: Attractive small cones are produced on relatively young trees, adding detail through the year.
Ideal Applications
Japanese Garden Feature: The traditional pine for a gravel, stone and moss composition.
Sculptural Specimen: A single plant in a simple bed reads as a living sculpture, particularly with lighting.
Large Containers: Slow growth and tolerance of restricted roots make it a long term container subject.
Conifer and Rockery Collections: Its colour and texture sit well among other slow growing conifers and grasses.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; group at 3m if planted in numbers
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m to 5m, giving the tiered branching room to show
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of moderate fertility; it tolerates poor and rocky ground but not wet feet
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers and then reduce, since established pines resent constantly damp soil. Mulch to keep the root zone stable, avoid heavy nitrogen feeding which pushes soft coarse growth, and shape by pinching new candles in spring rather than cutting back into old wood.
