Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Weeping White Pine - Pinus strobus ‘Pendula’
Few conifers are as openly sculptural as the weeping form of Pinus strobus, whose long soft blue-green needles hang from limbs that cascade and twist rather than climb. It has no fixed shape of its own: the eventual height depends entirely on how high the leader is staked during training, and everything below that point pours downward. Gardeners choose it as a living sculpture, usually as a single specimen with room to be seen from several sides.
Why Weeping White Pine
Trained height: Staking the leader sets the final height, so the same plant can finish at two metres or four depending on how it is grown on.
Cascading limbs: Branches arch out then fall vertically, often draping to the ground and pooling around the base.
Long soft needles: Five-needle bundles up to around 10cm long move in the slightest breeze, which is a large part of the appeal.
Individual character: No two plants train the same way, so each specimen ends up genuinely unique.
Cold hardy: Thoroughly frost tolerant, making it a strong choice for the highlands and southern states.
Ideal Applications
Lawn specimen: Given a clear circle of turf or gravel, the full weeping outline can be read from every angle.
Water feature surrounds: The cascade echoes falling water and softens hard pond edges.
Retaining wall tops: Planted above a wall it spills over the face, which suits split-level gardens.
Courtyard sculpture: Substitutes for a piece of garden art in a paved or gravelled space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; allow 3m if grouped informally
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m so the cascade is never crowded
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in cool to cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus-rich, acid to neutral soil with reliable drainage; avoid limey soils and heavy wet clay
Establishment Care: Retain the nursery stake until the leader has set the height you want, then remove it and let the crown fall. Water deeply through the first two summers and mulch widely, keeping the root zone cool since this species resents dry, baked soil.
