Dwarf Blue Scots Pine - Pinus sylvestris ‘Glauca Nana’
Most pines are a commitment of space. This one is not. ‘Glauca Nana’ is a dwarf, densely branched form of Pinus sylvestris that builds a broad rounded to conical bush of stiff, twisted, blue grey needles and stays at a scale that fits a rockery, a border or a large pot. The blue is strongest in cold weather, which makes it useful in cool climate gardens through the months when everything else has shut down. Growth is slow enough that it needs no pruning at all to hold its size.
Why Dwarf Blue Scots Pine
Contained Size: A dwarf selection that fits a garden bed rather than a paddock, with no cutting back required.
Needle Colour: Blue grey needles held in pairs, twisted along the shoot, with the colour deepening through winter.
Density: Tight branching gives a solid mass rather than an open pine outline, so it reads as a shrub in the planting.
Cold Endurance: Fully hardy to severe frost and snow, which makes it a natural in alpine and tablelands gardens.
Low Input: Once established it needs no feeding, no shaping and very little water.
Ideal Applications
Rockery and Gravel Bed: Sits correctly among boulders and low alpines where a full sized conifer would swamp the scene.
Large Container: Slow growth and dense form make it one of the better conifers for a permanent pot.
Cool Climate Border: Provides year round evergreen structure behind perennials that die back in winter.
Small Garden Conifer: The choice where the pine look is wanted but there is no room for a pine.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a low informal run.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m.
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, sandy or gravelly, acidic to neutral. Heavy wet clay will kill it and no amount of care will compensate.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then only in extended drought. Keep mulch thin and pulled back from the stem, and if you want an even tighter form, pinch the spring candles back by half rather than shearing the foliage.
