Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Scots Pine - Pinus sylvestris
Pinus sylvestris is unusual among pines for what happens to its bark: the upper trunk and main limbs shed into flaking plates of orange and salmon that glow against blue green foliage, especially in winter light. The needles are short, twisted and paired, and the crown becomes irregular and open with age rather than staying rigidly conical, which is why mature specimens read as picturesque rather than plantation like. It is a cool climate tree for Tasmania, Victoria, the NSW tablelands and the Adelaide Hills.
Why Scots Pine
Orange upper bark: The flaking copper coloured bark on the upper trunk is the tree's signature and improves with age.
Character crown: Older trees develop an open, irregular, wind sculpted head rather than a uniform cone.
Blue green needles: Short twisted paired needles give a finer, cooler toned texture than most large pines.
Poor soil tolerance: It thrives on sandy, gravelly, acidic and low fertility ground where other trees struggle.
Cold and wind hardiness: Hard frost, snow and exposed sites are all well within its range.
Ideal Applications
Rural windbreak: Planted in a row along a boundary it filters cold wind across paddocks and homestead gardens.
Acreage specimen: Given room on a large lawn the mature bark and irregular crown become the focal point.
Grouped stand: Three or five planted together create a woodland effect with the trunks as the feature.
Difficult sandy ground: It establishes on light infertile soils where broadleaf trees fail.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m centres for a windbreak row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m centres, and well clear of buildings, services and septic fields
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in cool districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly soil, acidic to neutral. It tolerates low fertility but not waterlogging or humid subtropical summers
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers, then leave it to fend for itself, as an established pine resents pampering. Mulch with coarse bark or fallen needles, keep grass and weed competition off the root plate for the first three years, and avoid pruning the leader at any stage.
