Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Little Osaka Japanese Black Pine - Pinus thunbergii ‘Little Osaka’
Japanese black pine is the rugged, dark needled pine that lines the coasts of Japan and takes salt wind, sand and poor soil in its stride. ‘Little Osaka’ is a compact selection of Pinus thunbergii, grown for shorter internodes and denser needle cover on a plant that stays in scale with a courtyard rather than becoming a forest tree. Its stiff dark green needles and blocky irregular branching make it a natural subject for shaped and cloud pruned work.
Why Little Osaka Black Pine
Compact Growth: Restrained extension keeps it usable in gardens where the straight species would be far too large.
Dense Dark Needles: Stiff needles in tight bundles create a solid, textural mass that holds through winter.
Coastal Hardiness: Black pine is one of the most salt tolerant conifers in cultivation and stands up to exposed seaside positions.
Sand and Poor Soil Tolerance: It performs on lean, sharply drained ground where richer soils would only make it soft.
Built for Shaping: The classic pine for niwaki and cloud pruning, responding predictably to candle pinching each spring.
Ideal Applications
Shaped Feature Specimen: Cloud pruned or tiered in a gravel bed as the focal point of a courtyard.
Coastal Gardens: Holds form and colour in salt wind where many ornamentals brown off.
Japanese Influenced Planting: Sits with stone, raked gravel, moss and clipped evergreens as intended.
Large Containers: Tolerates confined roots well, which suits terraces and entries.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging plant; group at 2m to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained, sandy or gravelly soil of low to moderate fertility; wet ground is fatal
Establishment Care: Water deeply during the first two summers, then let the plant harden off with far less irrigation than a broadleaf tree needs. Keep fertiliser light so growth stays tight and characterful, and manage shape by pinching spring candles rather than cutting into bare wood, which does not reshoot.
