Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ogon Japanese Black Pine - Pinus thunbergii ‘Ogon’
Ogon means gold, and that is the point of this selection: the stiff needles of the Japanese black pine carried in golden yellow rather than dark green, with the colour at its strongest through the cold months. Pinus thunbergii ‘Ogon’ is slow and compact, so the colour arrives on a plant that stays the size of a large shrub for many years. Set against dark green hedging or grey stone it reads as a piece of deliberate lighting in the garden.
Why Ogon Black Pine
Golden Needles: Foliage carries a yellow gold tone year round, brightening noticeably as temperatures drop in winter.
Winter Presence: It peaks exactly when deciduous planting is bare and the rest of the garden is flat.
Restrained Size: Slow compact growth keeps it in proportion with courtyards, entries and feature beds.
Salt and Sand Tolerant: It inherits the coastal toughness of the black pine and copes with exposed seaside sites.
Sun for Colour, With Limits: Full sun produces the best gold, though in the hottest inland districts some afternoon protection prevents needle scorch.
Ideal Applications
Colour Accent: Placed against dark foliage or dark render, it lifts a planting scheme without relying on flowers.
Japanese Style Composition: Shaped and pruned as niwaki among stone, gravel and clipped mounds.
Feature Container: Suits a large pot near an entry where the winter colour is seen daily.
Coastal Feature Planting: One of the few gold conifers that stands up to salt wind.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging plant; group at 2m to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil; avoid rich, heavy or wet ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply but not often through the first two summers, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. Feed sparingly, since heavy nitrogen dulls the gold and produces loose growth, and manage size by pinching the spring candles rather than pruning back into bare wood.
