Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Oriental Plane - Platanus orientalis
Platanus orientalis is the plane of the eastern Mediterranean, more deeply and finely cut in the leaf than the familiar London plane, with the same flaking camouflage bark and enormous mature spread. It is a genuinely large tree for parks, broad avenues and country properties, planted where a century of shade is the point. Australian councils and estate designers use it because it tolerates heat, drought and poor urban soil better than most deciduous trees of its scale.
Why Oriental Plane
Exfoliating Bark: Patchwork cream, olive and grey bark makes the winter trunk as good as the summer canopy.
Deeply Cut Leaves: Foliage is more finely divided than London plane, giving a lighter looking canopy.
Extreme Longevity: Plane trees regularly live for centuries, making this a genuine legacy planting.
Heat and Drought Hardiness: Established trees cope with hot dry Australian summers and reflected urban heat.
Massive Shade: A mature canopy cools a courtyard, car park or village green in a way small trees cannot.
Ideal Applications
Grand Avenue: Repeated down a long driveway or boulevard where full scale can be allowed.
Parkland Shade: Single trees on open lawn covering large areas of ground.
Pleached or Pollarded Screen: Regular pruning keeps it as a formal elevated hedge in tighter settings.
Rural Homestead Planting: A traditional shade tree around farmhouses and outbuildings.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m if pleached or pollarded
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 15m
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, prefers deep moist loam but accepts clay, alkaline soil and compaction
Establishment Care: Water deeply and infrequently through the first three summers to drive roots down rather than out. Give it a very generous root zone away from paving, drains and footings, as this is a large tree with a substantial root system, and clear the fine leaf and seed ball litter each autumn since the hairs can irritate skin and airways.
