Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
A Okay Dwarf Plum - Prunus domestica ‘A Okay’
A genetically dwarf European plum, ‘A Okay’ holds the flowering and fruiting character of Prunus domestica on a frame short enough to net, prune and harvest from the ground. The short internodes give it a naturally congested, twiggy habit, so it reads as a rounded small tree rather than a stunted standard. It is the answer for a courtyard or a small rear yard where a full-size plum would take the whole space and half the sunlight.
Why A Okay Dwarf Plum
True Dwarf Habit: The compact size comes from the variety itself, not from severe pruning, so the tree stays in proportion without constant intervention.
Reachable Canopy: The entire crop and every pruning cut sit within reach from ground level, which matters for netting against birds and fruit fly.
Early Blossom: White flowers open in late winter to early spring, ahead of most of the deciduous garden.
Container Suitability: Small enough to hold long term in a large pot on a paved courtyard or balcony.
Winter Light: Being deciduous, it lets winter sun through to windows and living areas that an evergreen would block.
Ideal Applications
Small Courtyard Orchard: Two or three dwarf stone fruit at close centres give a rotating harvest in a few square metres.
Pot Culture: Grows well long term in a 500mm or larger container with regular feeding and reliable watering.
Front Garden Feature: Blossom in late winter and clean summer foliage make it presentable in a visible position.
Productive Border Edge: Sits at the front of a mixed bed without shading perennials behind it.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a low fruiting row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Winter into early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Well-drained loam with a neutral to slightly acidic pH; plums resent heavy waterlogged clay around the crown
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first summer, easing back as the tree hardens off in autumn. Mulch 75mm deep in a wide ring kept clear of the trunk collar, and thin any heavy fruit set in the first couple of seasons so young branches are not pulled out of shape.
