Golf Gold Plum - Prunus salicina ‘Golf Gold’
Japanese plums like Prunus salicina differ from their European cousins in two ways that matter in an Australian garden: they need far less winter chill, and they carry their blossom earlier and heavier. ‘Golf Gold’ is a yellow-fruited selection of that group, forming a spreading, open-crowned small tree that fruits in warm temperate districts where a European plum would sulk. Choose it where you want stone fruit in a coastal or subtropical position rather than a cold tableland one.
Why Golf Gold Plum
Low Chill Adaptation: Japanese plums crop reliably in milder winters, extending stone fruit into coastal New South Wales and south east Queensland.
Heavy Blossom: Massed white flowers smother the bare branches in late winter, well before most deciduous trees wake up.
Yellow Fruit: The gold-skinned fruit reads differently in the bowl and on the tree from the usual dark blood plums.
Spreading Frame: Naturally wide, low-branching habit makes it easy to keep short and productive with summer pruning.
Fast to Bear: Japanese plums are among the quicker stone fruit to come into commercial-style cropping once established.
Ideal Applications
Home Orchard Row: Plant alongside a second Japanese plum flowering at the same time, since most selections in this group set far better with a partner.
Blossom Feature: Positioned where it is seen from the house, the late winter flowering does real ornamental work.
Summer Shade: The broad canopy shades a deck or lawn through the hot months and admits winter sun once leaves drop.
Rural Driveway: Spaced along a farm entrance it gives blossom, fruit and a defined edge without heavy maintenance.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m for a pruned fruiting row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter and very early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free-draining loam; Japanese plums are intolerant of waterlogging and are best mounded on clay
Establishment Care: Deep soak weekly through the first two summers, increasing frequency during heatwaves and while fruit is sizing. Mulch to 100mm over a wide grass-free ring, and shorten new growth after harvest to keep fruiting wood low rather than letting the tree escape upward.
