Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Santa Rosa Plum (Espalier) - Prunus salicina ‘Santa Rosa’
Of all the Japanese plums grown in Australia, ‘Santa Rosa’ has stayed in home gardens longest because it does two things well: it crops without a partner, and it tastes better than anything sold in a supermarket. Trained as a flat espalier, Prunus salicina ‘Santa Rosa’ carries its blossom and fruit on a single plane of horizontal arms that can be netted, thinned and picked from the ground. Fruit colours deep crimson purple through late December and January.
Why This Plum
Crops Alone: Partly self fertile, so one trained tree will fruit, with a second Japanese plum simply increasing the yield.
Eating Quality: Amber flesh, red under the skin, sweet with a tart edge that stops it being cloying.
Warm Climate Suitability: A low winter chill requirement that fits coastal and warm temperate Australia.
Late Winter Bloom: Clouds of white flowers open before the leaves and before most of the garden has started.
Netting Access: Flat trained growth is far easier to net against birds and fruit fly than an open tree.
Ideal Applications
North facing wall: Stored heat advances ripening and improves fruit colour.
Productive boundary: A row of espaliers replaces a fence line hedge with something that crops.
Narrow side garden: Uses a strip of ground too tight for any conventional fruit tree.
Formal kitchen garden: Trained tiers give a vegetable garden permanent structure through winter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3-3.5m for a continuous trained row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Well drained loam with compost worked through, and no tolerance of standing water at any time of year
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, then weekly, keeping moisture steady from flowering to harvest. Tie each new extension to the wires while the wood is supple, mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, and prune in late summer to hold the shape.
