Cooktown Sunset Frangipani - Plumeria ‘Cooktown Sunset’
Named for the colours of a far north Queensland evening, this frangipani opens flowers washed through apricot, pink and gold rather than the plain white and yellow of the common form. Like all Plumeria rubra selections it builds a low, wide, candelabra of thick grey branches, drops its leaves through the cool dry months and flowers heavily across summer with the sweet evening scent frangipanis are grown for. It suits frost free coastal and subtropical gardens where a small, wide crowned, low water tree is wanted near a terrace.
Why Cooktown Sunset Frangipani
Sunset Colouring: Petals blend apricot, pink and gold, with the tone shifting as each flower ages.
Evening Fragrance: Scent strengthens after dusk, which makes it worth siting near outdoor living areas.
Winter Sculpture: Bare grey branches form a candelabra outline that carries the garden through the dormant months.
Drought Hardiness: Thick succulent stems store water, so it copes with long dry spells once established.
Low Wide Habit: The spreading crown gives shade over a seat without the height of a conventional shade tree.
Ideal Applications
Poolside Feature: Its warm climate character and modest litter make it a standard choice beside pools.
Courtyard Shade: A wide low canopy shelters a seating area without dominating a small space.
Coastal Front Gardens: It handles salt laden wind and sandy soil in frost free coastal suburbs.
Large Containers: Grown in a pot it can be moved under cover in districts with occasional cold snaps.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m for a grouped planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Late spring through summer, while the plant is in active growth and soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Sharply draining sandy or gravelly soil; wet cold soil in winter is the most common cause of stem rot
Establishment Care: Water moderately through the first warm season and cut watering right back once the leaves drop in autumn. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark clear of the stem, and be aware the milky sap is a skin and eye irritant, so wear gloves when pruning.
