Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Indian Beech - Pongamia pinnata
Pongamia pinnata is one of the toughest broad canopy shade trees available to Australian gardens, and it is native to our own northern coastline as well as to South and South East Asia. It builds a wide, low domed head of glossy pinnate leaves, briefly sheds and refoliates in spring with a copper flush, then hangs sprays of pale lilac to pink pea flowers. Salt, wind, drought, poor soil and periodic waterlogging all fail to bother it, which is why it turns up in coastal streetscapes and car parks nationally.
Why Indian Beech
Canopy Spread: The crown grows wider than tall, producing a broad umbrella of shade over paving or lawn.
Site Toughness: It tolerates salt spray, compacted soil, drought and short periods of inundation.
Spring Flush: New foliage emerges bronze to copper and turns glossy green, an effect as good as the flowers.
Flower Sprays: Pale lilac, pink or white pea flowers hang in loose racemes through spring into early summer.
Nitrogen Fixing: As a legume it improves the soil around it, useful on degraded or sandy sites.
Ideal Applications
Coastal shade tree: Handles beachfront exposure where most broad canopy trees burn off.
Street and car park planting: A proven municipal tree for hot, hard, low maintenance situations.
Acreage shade for stock and vehicles: The wide head shelters a large area from one tree.
Windbreak rows: Planted in lines on exposed northern and coastal properties.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m centres for a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m centres, since the crown spreads widely
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer; early wet season in the tropics
Soil & Drainage: Extremely adaptable, from coastal sand to clay; prefers reasonable drainage but tolerates periodic wet
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer and then only in extended dry, as it becomes self sufficient quickly. Mulch to 100mm and formative prune early to lift the crown, because low branching is its natural tendency. Note that the seeds and pods are toxic if eaten, so site it away from young children and livestock feeding areas.
