Lombardy Poplar - Populus nigra ‘Italica’
Nothing else produces a 20m green exclamation mark in under a decade. Populus nigra ‘Italica’ is the fastigiate black poplar, a narrow column of upswept branches that has defined farm boundaries and driveways across southern Australia for well over a century. It is chosen when speed matters more than longevity: a windbreak or screen that needs to work in five years rather than twenty, on a site with room for its aggressive roots.
Why Lombardy Poplar
Rate Of Establishment: Among the fastest deciduous trees available, commonly adding a metre or more of height a year on a moist site.
Column Habit: Branches sweep almost vertically, holding the crown to a few metres wide even at full height.
Winter Sun: Drops its leaves completely, so a row screens in summer and lets low winter sun through to the house.
Autumn Gold: Foliage turns clear butter yellow in autumn, holding for a fortnight in cool districts.
Sound And Movement: The flattened leaf stalks make the whole canopy shimmer and rustle in the lightest breeze.
Ideal Applications
Rural Windbreak: Rows along paddock boundaries to lift and slow prevailing wind over pasture and orchards.
Fast Boundary Screening: Blocking a shed, silo or neighbouring build within a few seasons.
Driveway Avenue: A classic long entry planting on acreage where root spread is not a concern.
Dam and Creek Margins: Handles seasonally wet ground that would kill most fast growing trees.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m for a continuous wall of foliage
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m for distinct columns
Best Planting Season: Winter into early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep moist soils give the best result, including heavy and seasonally wet ground. On dry sandy sites growth is poor without irrigation
Establishment Care: Water generously through the first two summers, as this species trades drought tolerance for speed. Site it well away from services: allow at least 12 to 15m clearance from drains, septic lines, paving, pools and footings, because the roots are vigorous, shallow and inclined to sucker.
