Want to see the actual plant?
The photo shows this species, not the individual plant reserved for you. Send us an enquiry and we usually reply within 1 business day with photos of the actual stock available in the size you want.
Request photosHow tall it arrives: 400mm about 1.5 to 2.5m, 45L about 1.5 to 2.5m, 75L about 1.5 to 2.5m, 400L about 4 to 6m. Heights vary with species and season. How pot sizes work
Getting it in: the largest size here needs machine access rather than a doorway, and sometimes a lift over the roof. Measure the narrowest point on the route and tell us on the booking call. Standard access is included in the price, and anything unusual is quoted and agreed with you before work begins. What happens on installation day
Looking for a larger size?
Sizes shown are the sizes we currently source in this species. If you need larger specimens, project quantities or a size not listed, our sourcing team can look for it through our national supplier network. We confirm your exact stock with you on the booking call before anything ships.

Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Simon Poplar - Populus simonii
Bred by climate rather than by nurseries, this northern Chinese poplar earns its place on hard inland sites. Populus simonii carries small glossy diamond shaped leaves on reddish twigs, breaks dormancy earlier than almost any other deciduous tree, and shrugs off the frost, wind and temperature swings of Australia's tablelands and wheat belt. Growers choose it over Lombardy poplar where a slightly broader, tougher and less thirsty shelter tree is wanted.
Why Simon Poplar
Cold Hardiness: Handles severe frost and dry cold winters that damage softer poplars and willows.
Early Leaf: One of the first trees into leaf in spring, which brings shelter forward by several weeks.
Fine Foliage Texture: Smaller neater leaves than most poplars give the canopy a lighter, less coarse look.
Upright Young Habit: Narrow and pyramidal for the first decade, broadening gradually with age.
Shelterbelt Speed: Reaches useful shelter height within four or five seasons on a reasonable site.
Ideal Applications
Farm Shelterbelt: Multi row plantings to protect stock, crops and homesteads from prevailing wind.
Inland Screening: Fast height on cold dry blocks where evergreen screens struggle.
Erosion Control: Dense fibrous roots bind creek banks and gully sides.
Rural Driveways: Informal avenues on acreage where a broad crown is acceptable.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a shelterbelt row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m for open grown trees
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across clay, loam and gravelly soils, tolerant of both seasonal wet and periods of dryness once established, but avoid permanently boggy ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers to build the root plate, then taper to occasional deep soaks. Mulch widely to suppress competing grass and keep roots at least 10m from drains and paving, as poplars sucker readily from disturbed roots.
