Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pride of Bolivia - Tipuana tipu
Tipuana tipu is the wide crowned South American shade tree that lines older streets through Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, drawing attention every early summer when it covers itself and the ground beneath in apricot yellow pea flowers. Its value is scale and speed: few trees build a 15 to 25m umbrella of filtered shade as quickly, and it does so on hot, dry, difficult sites. It is a big tree with vigorous surface roots, so it belongs on parks, acreage and generous verges rather than close to paving or small courtyards.
Why Pride of Bolivia
Rapid canopy: fast growth produces meaningful shade in years rather than decades, which is why it was planted so widely last century.
Broad umbrella form: a low branching, spreading habit gives a flat topped crown far wider than it is deep.
Summer flowering: masses of yellow-orange flowers cover the tree in early summer and carpet the ground beneath afterwards.
Filtered shade: fine pinnate leaflets soften rather than block light, so grass and groundcovers survive underneath.
Heat and drought hardiness: once established it handles extended dry spells, heat and a wide range of soils without irrigation.
Ideal Applications
Park and acreage shade: on open ground it becomes the single dominant canopy that shelters seating, paths and turf.
Wide boulevards: it suits road reserves with deep setbacks where the crown and roots have room to spread properly.
Large car parks: it shades broad areas of asphalt on sites where root space is measured in metres, not pit dimensions.
Rural entry avenue: spaced generously along a driveway it forms a grand, arching approach on a farm or estate.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 15m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer
Soil & Drainage: Tolerates a wide range of soils including clay, loam and sandy soils; prefers well-drained conditions but is moderately drought tolerant once established
Establishment Care: Water deeply and regularly for the first two years to encourage deep root establishment, then reduce to occasional deep watering during dry periods. Apply a layer of mulch around the root zone to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
