Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Frosted King Protea - Protea ‘Frosted King’
‘Frosted King’ is a king type protea grown for bracts that carry a pale, silvered finish over the base colour, giving the large bowl shaped head a dusted or frosted appearance in low light. Like all Protea, it is a Cape Proteaceae adapted to lean, acidic, sharply drained soils and dry summers, and it forms a low spreading shrub topped by disproportionately large flowers. It is planted where a low water garden needs one dramatic cool season bloom rather than continuous colour.
Why Frosted King
Bract Finish: The frosted, silvery overlay on the bracts separates it visually from the standard pink king types.
Head Size: King type blooms are large, wide and long lasting, holding on the bush for weeks.
Cool Season Timing: Flowering falls through the cooler months when most dry garden plants are dormant.
Low Input: It wants poor soil and minimal water, and actively declines when fed or irrigated conventionally.
Vase Performance: Cut heads last exceptionally well fresh and hold their shape when dried.
Ideal Applications
Statement specimen: Positioned singly where the frosted bracts catch morning or late afternoon light.
Proteaceae collection bed: Grouped with other proteas and leucadendrons sharing the same soil requirements.
Sandy coastal garden: Suits the naturally sharp draining sands of southern Australian coastal sites.
Cutting production: Grown in rows for fresh and dried florist work.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging subject; 1.2 to 1.5m if planted in a line
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn in temperate districts; early spring where winters are cold
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, gritty and sharply drained; strictly no phosphorus fertiliser, manure or heavy compost
Establishment Care: Water once a week deeply for the first three months, then step down to occasional soaks in extended dry only. Plant proud of the grade on a low mound, mulch coarsely with the crown left clear, and leave the shallow root zone undisturbed.
