Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Globe Cherry (Standard) - Prunus fruticosa ‘Globosa’
The globe cherry is a naturally dwarf, tight growing cherry grafted onto a clear straight stem, so it produces a dense rounded head at a fixed height and simply stays there. Prunus fruticosa ‘Globosa’ needs almost no pruning to hold that shape, which is the reason it is specified for formal avenues and repeated entry planting in cool climate Australian gardens. In spring the whole head disappears under small white blossom before the fine glossy foliage emerges.
Why Globe Cherry
Self forming head: The dwarf habit builds a tight sphere without shearing, unlike a clipped standard that needs constant work.
Fixed mature height: A top worked standard stops growing upward, so it can be planted under eaves lines and services with confidence.
Spring blossom: Small single white flowers smother the head for two to three weeks in early to mid spring.
Cold and dry hardiness: The steppe cherry parentage makes it far tougher in frost and drought than ornamental Japanese cherries.
Clean structure: Bare in winter, the sphere of fine twigs on a straight stem is architectural in its own right.
Ideal Applications
Formal avenue: Evenly spaced standards down a driveway or path give repetition at a human scale.
Entry pairs: Two matched globes either side of a gate or door are a classic and low maintenance formal gesture.
Under power lines and eaves: One of the safest choices where overhead clearance limits tree selection.
Courtyard and lawn accents: Small footprint and modest roots let it sit close to paving and turf.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m in a continuous row; it is a specimen form, not a screening plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant, is ideal for all standard grafted deciduous trees
Soil & Drainage: Well drained loam of moderate fertility; avoid waterlogged clay, which causes collar rot in grafted cherries
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, since a small head on a slender stem dries out faster than its size suggests. Keep the stem staked and tied loosely for the first two years and remove any suckers arising from the rootstock below the graft as soon as they appear.
