Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
First Blush Flowering Cherry - Prunus x incam ‘First Blush’
First Blush belongs to the Prunus x incam group, a cross between the Fuji cherry and the Taiwan cherry, and that Taiwanese parentage is what makes the hybrid genuinely useful in Australia: it needs less winter chill than a classic Japanese flowering cherry, so it blossoms reliably in milder districts where those varieties disappoint. Soft pink single flowers open on bare wood in late winter to early spring, ahead of almost everything else in the garden, on a compact upright frame.
Why First Blush
Lower Chill Requirement: The incam hybrids flower dependably in warmer temperate gardens that cannot satisfy a sato-zakura cherry.
Very Early Bloom: Flowers arrive at the end of winter, when the rest of the garden is still dormant.
Single Flowers: Open, clean-petalled blooms show the stamens and attract bees, unlike sterile double forms.
Compact Frame: Stays modest and upright, so it suits gardens with no room for a spreading cherry.
Autumn Colour: Leaves finish orange to red before falling, giving a second season of interest.
Ideal Applications
Small Garden Feature: Sized for a front garden or courtyard where a full cherry would overwhelm the space.
Narrow Avenue: Repeats well along a driveway or verge without the width of the spreading Japanese cherries.
Winter Focal Point: Positioned in view of a window it marks the turn of the season better than any evergreen.
Lawn Grouping: Planted in threes it gives a drift of early blossom across an open lawn.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a grove
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, neutral to slightly alkaline. Add gypsum and raise the planting position on clay, and keep lawn sprinklers from constantly wetting the trunk base.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and mulch out to the drip line, keeping the mulch off the bark. Prune only lightly and only in dry summer weather, since winter cuts on cherries invite silver leaf.
