Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Douglas Fir - Pseudotsuga menziesii
Pseudotsuga menziesii is a forest conifer from the Pacific north west of North America, and in the cool high rainfall parts of Australia it behaves like one: fast, straight, and eventually very large. The soft flat needles are aromatic when crushed, the young form is a near-perfect narrow pyramid, and the cones are instantly identifiable by the three-pointed bracts that poke out between the scales. This is a tree for a cool tableland, highland or Tasmanian property with real space, not a suburban courtyard.
Why Douglas Fir
Textbook Pyramid: Young and semi-mature trees hold a symmetrical conical form with almost no intervention.
Soft Foliage: Unlike spruces, the needles are flexible and pleasant to handle, with a sweet resinous scent.
Rapid Early Growth: Puts on strong annual extension in its first two decades on suitable cool moist sites.
Distinctive Cones: The protruding three-pronged bracts make mature trees easy to identify and add winter interest.
Cold and Snow Hardy: Comfortable with hard frost and snow load in the Victorian and New South Wales high country and across Tasmania.
Ideal Applications
Rural Shelter Belt: Planted in staggered rows it gives serious wind protection on exposed cool-climate farmland.
Cool Climate Specimen: A single tree on a large lawn develops into a genuine landmark conifer over decades.
Christmas Tree Plantation: Widely used for cut Christmas trees because of its form, needle retention and scent.
Highland Property Avenue: Long driveways on cool tableland blocks suit it, provided planting sits well back from buildings and services.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a shelter belt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m, and keep specimens at least 10m from buildings, pipes and paving
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring, avoiding midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil; unsuited to alkaline, shallow, hot or drought-prone sites
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first three summers, as heat and dryness are the main causes of failure in Australian plantings. Mulch to 100mm over a wide ring and stake only if the site is very exposed, releasing ties within two years so the trunk builds its own taper.
Plant Details
