Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ptychosperma waitianum
A slender, small-growing palm from New Guinea that belongs in the understorey rather than the skyline. Ptychosperma waitianum forms a modest clump of thin, cane-like ringed stems, each carrying a small crown of pinnate fronds with the squared-off, jagged leaflet tips characteristic of the genus, and mature plants hang clusters of bright red fruit. It is rare in Australian cultivation and is valued for exactly what larger palms cannot offer: fine texture and true tropical character at a size that fits under an existing canopy.
Why Ptychosperma waitianum
Small Stature: It matures at a height that suits a courtyard, an atrium or a planted bed beneath larger trees.
Slender Clumping Stems: Multiple thin canes give a light, layered look rather than one heavy trunk.
Jagged Leaflets: The bitten-off leaflet tips create a distinctive, finely textured crown.
Red Fruit: Established plants carry bright red fruit clusters that stand out against dark foliage.
Shade Requirement: It wants filtered light and humidity, and will burn badly in open Australian sun.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest Understorey: Planted in groups beneath established canopy where light is dappled and air stays humid.
Shaded Courtyard: A sheltered, walled space that traps warmth and moisture suits it in subtropical gardens.
Atrium and Light Well: Ideal where a slim, low-litter palm is needed in a covered internal space.
Collector Groupings: Combined with other New Guinea and Solomon Island palms in a themed planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.8m for a continuous understorey band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn, in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Rich, friable, humus laden soil that stays evenly moist while draining freely; never let it dry out completely
Establishment Care: Water two or three times weekly through the first two summers and maintain deep leaf litter or composted bark mulch to hold soil moisture. Provide overhead protection from direct sun and cold wind, and note that it is frost tender at every stage of life.
