Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Spright Ornamental Pear - Pyrus calleryana ‘Spright’
Ornamental pears earn their place in Australian streets and gardens by being almost indifferent to bad conditions: Pyrus calleryana tolerates compacted soil, clay, drought once established, wind and urban pollution, then delivers a heavy white blossom in early spring and reliable red to burgundy autumn colour even in mild coastal climates where most deciduous trees stay dull. ‘Spright’ is a selected form of that species, grown for consistency of shape and colour from tree to tree.
Why an Ornamental Pear
Spring Blossom: Masses of small white flowers open in early spring, largely before or as the new leaves emerge.
Dependable Autumn Colour: Glossy summer leaves turn red, burgundy and purple and hold late into the season, even in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth where colour is usually unreliable.
Urban Toughness: It performs in compacted, poorly aerated soils, exposed nature strips and hot paved surrounds.
Cloned Uniformity: Being a named selection, a row of trees matches in habit and colouring in a way seedling pears never do.
Manageable Root System: Roots are less aggressive than many fast shade trees, which makes it usable closer to paving than a mulberry or a fig.
Ideal Applications
Driveway Avenues: Planted in matched rows for a formal approach with two strong seasonal displays.
Street and Verge Trees: A standard urban choice where soil conditions are poor and maintenance is limited.
Deciduous Screening: A row gives summer privacy from an overlooking neighbour while letting winter light through.
Courtyard and Lawn Specimen: A single tree provides light summer shade without the bulk of a large evergreen canopy.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a closed deciduous screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m for an avenue
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, including clay and compacted urban soils, provided water does not pond around the root zone; pH 5.5 to 7.5
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and stake only if the site is exposed, removing ties within eighteen months. Callery pear selections vary in crown width, so allow for the wider figure when siting near a building, and carry out formative pruning in the first few years to remove tight narrow branch unions, which are the usual cause of limb failure in mature pears. Keep plantings away from bushland and remove any self sown seedlings, as callery pear has naturalised in parts of south eastern Australia.
