Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Javelin Ornamental Pear - Pyrus calleryana x pyrifolia ‘Javelin’
‘Javelin’ is the narrowest of the commonly planted ornamental pears, holding branches tight to a strongly vertical leader so that the mature crown is measured in one or two metres rather than four or five. That column of glossy foliage does the work of a tree in places where a tree normally will not fit: between a driveway and a boundary fence, along a narrow verge, or in a strip garden against a two-storey wall. Spring blossom is white and dense, and autumn colour runs through amber to deep red.
Why Javelin Ornamental Pear
Extremely Narrow Crown: A fastigiate habit lets you plant a canopy tree in a corridor barely two metres wide.
Reliable Autumn Colour: Turns amber, orange and burgundy in autumn even in relatively mild coastal districts.
Dense Spring Blossom: White flowers cover the full length of the column in early spring before leaf emergence.
Urban Toughness: Handles compacted soil, reflected heat, pollution and root restriction better than most deciduous ornamentals.
Minimal Pruning: The column is natural, not clipped, so it holds shape without annual shearing.
Siting note: Callery pear has naturalised in parts of south eastern Australia, so keep plantings away from bushland and remove any self sown seedlings.
Ideal Applications
Deciduous Screen: Planted in a tight line it creates a tall green wall in summer while letting winter sun through.
Driveway Avenue: The narrow crown keeps vehicle clearance without constant lateral pruning.
Boundary Strip Planting: Fits garden beds too narrow for a conventional shade tree, including between a house and a side fence.
Formal Repetition: Rows of matched columns give strong rhythm along a facade, courtyard or car park edge.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn through winter while dormant, or spring in cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Tolerant of most soils including clay, provided water does not pond around the crown
Establishment Care: Water deeply weekly through the first two summers, wetting the full root ball rather than the surrounding surface. Mulch to 75mm in a grass-free ring and stake against prevailing wind for the first year, since the narrow crown can act as a sail on exposed corner sites.
