Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Chastity Ornamental Pear - Pyrus x triploida ‘Chastity’
Ornamental pears are the workhorse street tree of Australian landscaping, and ‘Chastity’ is a triploid selection, meaning it sets no viable fruit and drops none of the small hard pears that make some pear plantings messy and weedy. Pyrus ‘Chastity’ carries a dense upright oval crown of glossy dark green leaves, a heavy cover of white blossom in early spring, and red to burgundy autumn colour before dropping cleanly. It is chosen where a formal, uniform, low maintenance deciduous tree is required and the site is too hot or exposed for maples or cherries.
Why Chastity Ornamental Pear
Sterile Habit: No fruit means no staining underfoot, no cleanup and no seedlings spreading beyond the garden.
Uniform Crown: Grafted trees grow to a consistent shape, which is what avenue and street planting depends on.
Early Blossom: White flowers open in early spring, often the first significant blossom in the garden.
Glossy Summer Foliage: Thick leathery leaves resist heat and wind burn through Australian summers.
Autumn Finish: Foliage turns red to burgundy late in the season and falls over a short, tidy period.
Ideal Applications
Formal Avenues: Matched rows along a drive or street produce the uniform effect pears are specified for.
Front Garden Screening: The upright oval crown filters views from the road without blocking the house.
Commercial Landscapes: Toughness and low litter make it a common choice for carparks and forecourts.
Boundary Rows: Planted along a fence it provides seasonal privacy and a defined edge.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m for a close screening row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn to late winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Tolerant of most soils including clay, provided drainage is reasonable; it handles compaction better than most ornamentals
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, tapering off as the canopy thickens. Mulch a metre wide circle, remove nursery stakes after the first year and thin any competing leaders early so a single dominant stem carries the crown.
