Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Swamp White Oak - Quercus bicolor
The oak to plant where other oaks drown. Quercus bicolor grows naturally on wet bottomland soils in eastern North America and handles ground that stays saturated through winter, which makes it genuinely useful on the heavy clay sites common across Melbourne, Adelaide and the tablelands. Its name comes from the leaves, dark glossy green above and coated silvery white beneath, so the whole canopy turns pale as the wind moves through it.
Why Swamp White Oak
Wet Soil Tolerance: Accepts heavy, poorly drained and seasonally waterlogged ground that kills most large deciduous trees.
Two Toned Canopy: Silvery white leaf undersides flash against dark upper surfaces in any breeze.
Peeling Young Bark: Papery flaking bark on young branches gives winter interest before the trunk becomes deeply ridged.
Broad Shade: A wide rounded crown that throws the sort of dense summer shade a park or large lawn needs.
Longevity: An oak planted now is a tree for a century or more, and it transplants better than most of the white oak group.
Ideal Applications
Parkland Shade: Single trees or groups across large lawns and public open space.
Low Lying Ground: Wet corners, swales and dam margins where drainage cannot easily be improved.
Rural Driveway: Widely spaced along a long entry on acreage.
Habitat And Shelter: Acorns and a dense crown provide food and cover for birds and insects.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 7m for a closed row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m for full crown development
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Prefers deep, moist to wet, acid to neutral soils. Foliage yellows with iron chlorosis on strongly alkaline or limey ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers to establish the taproot, then very little afterwards on a soil that holds moisture. Mulch a wide circle to 75mm and keep grass off the root plate for the first five years, and prune only in late winter to establish a single strong leader and a clear trunk to the height you need.
